Whilst not a Nikki Webster fan (!) I can not help but feel she was robbed in last nights edition of Dancing with the Stars. Contestants in the show are voted through to the next round through a combination of viewers votes and a panel of experts on the show. One of the so called experts voted Nikki and Sasha one point for their routine - the lowest score of the evening - ultimately removing Nikki from the contest. Other dancers so obviously worse than Nikki continue into the next round.

Its certainly not a show worth texting in any votes and one where the end result is meaningless.

I dunoo what is happening to me and I am falling apart.

Numb - Linkin Park

I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless
Lost under the surface
I don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure
Of walking in your shoes

[Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow]
Every step that I take is another mistake to you

I've
Become so numb
I can't feel you there
Become so tired
So much more aware
I'm becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you

Can't you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly
Afraid to lose control
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you

[Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow]
Every step that I take is
Another mistake to you
[Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow]
And every second I waste
Is more than I can take

And I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me
With someone disappointed in you

The Reason - Hoobastank

I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you

And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why i need you to hear

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is You [x4]

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

Leave (Get Out) - JoJo

[Verse 1]
I've been waiting all day for ya babe
So won't you come sit and to me talk and tell me how were gonna be together, always
Hope you know that when it's late at night, I hold on to my pillow tight, and think of how you promised me forever

(I never thought that anyone) Could make me feel this way
(Now that your here boy all I want) Is just the chance to say

[Chorus]
Get out (leave) right now, it's the end of you and me
It's too late (now) and I can't wait for you to be gone
Cause I know about her (who?) and I wonder (why) how I bought all the lies,
You said that you would treat me right, but you was just a waste of time (waste of time)

[Verse 2]
Tell me why your looking so confused, when i'm the one who didn't know the truth,
How could you ever be so cold, to go behind my back and call my friend
Boy you must have gone and bumped your head, cause you left her number on your phone

(So now after all it's said and done) maybe i'm the one to blame but
(To think that you could be the one) well it didn't work out that way

[Chorus]
Get out (leave) right now, it's the end of you and me
It's too late (now) and I can't wait for you to be gone
Cause i know about her (who) and I wonder (why) how I bought all the lies,
You said that you would treat me right, but you was just a waste of time (waste of time)

[Verse 3]
I wanted you right here with me, but I have no choice you gotta leave,
Because my heart breaking, with every word i'm saying,
I gave up everything I had on something that just wouldn't last,
But I refuse to cry, no tears will fall from these...eyes
Get out!

[Chorus 2x]
Get out (leave) right now, it's the end of you and me (you and me)
It's too late (now) and i can't wait for you to be gone (you to be gone)
Cause i know about her (loser) and I wonder (why) how I bought all the lies,
You said that you would treat me right, but you was just a waste of time (waste of time)

Get out, (leave) you and me (its too late) too late,
You, about her (loser, why)
You said that you would treat me right, but you was just a waste of time (waste of time)

Liberalism:

Posted on philosophy.com [Adelaide]: The political life of Australia has been, and should be, portrayed as working within a hegemonic liberal consensus. Liberalism is the political theory implicit in our political practice, and it articulates the assumptions about citizenship and freedom that inform our public life. Liberalism is rooted in its conception of freedom, and this is understood as the capacity of free subjects to choose their own values and ends. Hence all the emphasis on freedom of choice with respect to universities and compulsory unionism. If liberal politics focuses on the capacity of individuals to form and revise their conception of the good, then the liberal state remains neutral as to the goods which individuals pursue. So argues Michael Sandel in relation to US liberalism, but that account applies here as well, despite the utilitarian emphasis of Australian liberalism.
Military Medals

But the RSL's NSW state president, Don Rowe, told smh.com.au that no bravery medals should be awarded to the nine.

``All Australians value the wonderful job that defence forces have done serving humanity but the structure of our medals at the moment do not allow for issuing of medals for such (humanitarian) service sadly,'' Mr Rowe said.

He said honouring the nine with bravery awards would be an unprecedented move.

``You could even go so far as to say the young fellow killed in the Solomon's the other day [who fell down a hole] - there's no talk about him getting a medal.

"Where do you draw the line?''

Where indeed? My uncle was killed during WW2 while serving with the RAF in Africa and never received a posthumous award. If the government introduces a medal for those killed in peacetime service, does that mean my uncle and the 100,000+ killed so far in the line of duty will get one too?

This issue would not have come about except for the Indonesian government awarding the nine service people with an award, and the Indonesian President being in Australia to place of the medals on the caskets of the deceased.

As usual, the government looks like caving in to the tabloids and talkback radio.

If the government really wants to overhaul the Australian military honour system, it could look at replacing the last relic of British imperial honours in the local military, the VC. Like knighthoods, the VC has no place in modern Australia. All military honours should be indigenous. Why not the Australian Cross of Valour (ACV) instead of the VC?

"A wave of young people empowered to create knowledge, not merely absorb it, now flows in and out of the classroom - calling into question the convictions and processes that have served as the foundation of traditional higher education. It remains to be seen if traditional higher education will adjust sufficiently to truly engage the net generation."

The short article goes on to say that the thousands of hours of internet surfing have influence not just what net-gen learners think, but how they think, listing some traits which are a little to close to my thought patterns. for example speed over accuracy, "hypertext" minds that "leap around".
Day 9 - Bay Area & Alcatraz

We headed back into San Fran' today for another day of sight seeing. We missed our train out of Palo Alto & consequently we missed our ferry to Alcatraz. Luckily enough they have a standby feature which enabled us to get over to the island.

The first 2 shots are from the Ferry over to Alcatraz island.
The 3rd shot is from the docks looking up the hill to Jailhouse.
The final shot is of a moss covered hallway inside the Civil War built building next to the docks.

I highly recommend the tour of the old prison to anyone who visits San Fran. The Audio tour is especially good.

is it ever ok?!

Posted on lowercase [Warnbro]: i was almost involved in a car accident this morning when a guy tried to jump a queue of cars from a side street... he basically just did something really dumb and ended up nearly cleaning me up.

i honked at him to indicate my displeasure at his driving technique, and the next thing i know the guy is getting out of his car. so, i got out of my car... i'm 6'3" on a good day, so when he saw me get out of the car he kind of backed away (i think he was maybe expecting somebody a lot smaller!) and was a lot more sheepish about it all and after exchanging a few words he proceeded to get back in his car to move on.

during this process (which only lasted a matter of seconds), a bus had pulled up behind us, and the driver actually opened his door, half exited like he wanted to join the party, and started abusing us... and i don't mean tamely... he was really getting stuck into it, expletives and all! i gave him my best mean look (takes a lot of practice!), and he also got back in his cab but carried on mouthing off at me and the other guy for apparently holding him up, regardless of the fact that we'd nearly had a collision.

as i drove away, i thought it was unacceptable for a bus driver to be going on like that, regardless of the situation, so i called transperth on the spot to report the incident. the response was fascinating.the lady on the line asked me what happened, and i explained. she asked me to explain it again, at which i thought maybe she wasn't quite with the program, so i explained it again in greater detail.

her response...? "well, sir, if you were holding up the traffic, i can perhaps understand why he was upset with you..."

i asked her if she was kidding!!! i asked her, "is it EVER ok for one of your drivers to be abusing a member of the public, at ANY time?! is this EVER ok??"

she didn't seem to have a response to that, and apparently i'm going to get a call from her boss or someone who does... it should be interesting. having had a number of close calls with buses who seem to operate under the "we're-so-big-we-don't-care" method of driving, i'll be shocked if anything comes of this complaint at all... but, i was just so gob-smacked at a bus driver carrying on like that...

i mean, they're meant to be nice cuddly, friendly types... right?! not around here!

breaking news: single ladies! flesh-deprived fingers! movies! bedroom rearranging!

Posted on Ms. Torquceres [South Australia]: Well I had a long talk with Jas and JJ last night, and so I am now officially single. Why? Because they have decided to finally get married and try for another child. Jas's psych suggested she do something to make a change, and she and JJ decided on marriage. I think it's a fantastic idea; it's just what Jas needs. They thought I'd be upset and take it badly, but -let's face it- we all knew it would happen, it's just sooner than thought. And I'm remaining friends with both of them, so I don't see the problem. In other news: I have done some drastic damage to my left index finger (and no NOT for reasons you sick minded people would like to thik!) I was trying to cut the masking tape off the hoop for my mosquito net, when I stabbed the scissors into my finger. I had to pull the scissors out (which made a yucky slurping sound and took some flesh with it) and spent about 30 mins afterward screaming, crying and vomiting. For the next day and a half I couldn't move my finger at all, then -when I tried to pick a folder up- it cracked back into place. Now I can striaghten my finger, but it's still tingles and cracks from time-to-time. So tonight I'm going to con my parents (who I haven't been speaking to lately) into taking me to the doctor. In tomorrows news: Yung is going to come pick me up and take me into Mt Barker, where we're going to have lunch and maybe see a movie. I am finally getting out of the house. And for once, it's only been 3 days since the last time!In other, other news: I finally have my bedroom exactly how I want it. The finger incident happened when dad was putting up my mosquito net above my bed, and he also put up my beaded curtain. So now everything of mine is out of the boxes and either stored in the attic, or put in the place it will live for the next few years. (Or, you know, until I get bored and re-arrange again.)So that's my cuurent news. And noone can say I haven't updated for ages yet. Oh, and more songs up on this journal.Over and out for now.Love S.

DFO

Posted on The Land of Me ModBlog - the land of me [Melbourne]: yesterday my mum decided it would be a good idea to go to a DFO. to be precise, the direct factory outlet - in Cheltenham.

bargains reigned supreme as we tried on one after another t-shirt that was the wrong shape for human bodies - but they were cheap, so who's complaining?

anyway, eventually we found a shop with some clothes that fit our humanoid shapes, and stocked up for the winter. the shop's name was quikstop.

the best part was, not only were they humanoid shaped, they looked pretty darn decent as well! who would have thought?

we then drove out to chelsea i think to find another surf shop with genuine surfies running it.

they repeatedly told each other how radical some guy's vert was and how insanely gnarly the american cheater's board looked.

we then went to buy our clothes, to which they responded as if we wereinvading their territory, and one of the guys called the apprentice over to do it for him.

all in all i bought a jumper, two t-shirts, one shirt, and shorts.

it doesnt seem like all that much when i list it like that when i think about it. but there is quite a bit there though.

The 230s: Two Centuries of Church History

Posted on Radagast's Church History Project [Australian Capital Territory]:
Two hundred years after the Resurrection, Christianity had grown in spite of further persecution. Urban was Bishop of Rome, but died on 22 August of 230, and was replaced by Pontian. Demetrius had been Bishop of Alexandria since 189, and Origen was teaching at the school for Christian instruction there. Alexander was Bishop of Jerusalem, where he had established a library.

Since the 130s, extensive theological writings by Justin, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Tertullian had articulated the orthodox Christian point of view, in the face of Gnosticism and heretical forms of Christianity. The exact composition of the New Testament was not yet fixed: all Christians agreed on the four Gospels, Acts, and the Pauline Epistles, and most Christians also agreed on Hebrews, Revelation, I Peter, I John, and Jude. There was less agreement on II Peter, II John, III John, and James, and some Christians were treating Second Century writings such as the Epistle of Barnabas as Scripture.

Christian Art was beginning to appear. Eusebius describes a bronze statue of the woman cured of a haemorrhage by Jesus (Mark 5:24–34). It was located in Caesaria, and was already old when he was living there. He also describes Christian paintings (although his letters show that he personally disapproved of pictures or statues of Christ):

For they say that the woman with an issue of blood, who, as we learn from the sacred Gospel [Mark 5:24–34], received from our Saviour deliverance from her affliction, came from this place, and that her house is shown in the city, and that remarkable memorials of the kindness of the Saviour to her remain there. For there stands upon an elevated stone, by the gates of her house, a brazen image of a woman kneeling, with her hands stretched out, as if she were praying. Opposite this is another upright image of a man, made of the same material, clothed decently in a double cloak, and extending his hand toward the woman. At his feet, beside the statue itself, is a certain strange plant, which climbs up to the hem of the brazen cloak, and is a remedy for all kinds of diseases. They say that this statue is an image of Jesus. It has remained to our day, so that we ourselves also saw it when we were staying in the city. Nor is it strange that those of the Gentiles who, of old, were benefited by our Saviour, should have done such things, since we have learned also that the likenesses of his apostles Paul and Peter, and of Christ himself, are preserved in paintings, the ancients being accustomed, as it is likely, according to a habit of the Gentiles, to pay this kind of honor indiscriminately to those regarded by them as deliverers.

(Eusebius, The History of the Church, translated by the Rev. Arthur Cushman McGiffert, Book 7, Chapter 18 (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf201.iii.xii.xix.html). The passage also appears on page 234 of the Penguin Classics edition).

Dating from about 230 is a Christian house-church at Dura Europos, Syria:

Plan of renovations(creating worship room and baptistery)
Reconstructed baptistery

In contrast to the Church, the Roman Empire of the 230s was beginning to show signs of trouble. Corruption was on the increase, and barbarians were threatening to cross the Rhine and Danube Rivers. Soldiers were choosing new Emperors who bribed them, and then killing the Emperors when the faltering economy could not support more bribes. Christians of the time did not know it, but in less than a century, the Church was to take over the Empire.

Back in ManlyShelley beach. The National Park is on the right, Manlyskyline in the
middle.
Before invasion, the little bay was covered in beautiful palms.
It was decided that they'd make good pig food and some of the leaves
came in handy for hats. Recently a few have been replanted. Bandicoots
scruffle through the dusk, usually unnoticed by the tourist crowds.

The Eora, Guringai and Daruk Aboriginal nations used to live in this area.

Retail Therapy

I had not heard her sigh or complain (AT ALL). I love it!

Retail therapy was one of the (successful) ways I used (indulged in) to release stress from my system. The holistic objective (then) of retail therapy was how successful I could be at converting a ?want? into a ?need?. Indeed it was ?very? challenging. Bwahahaha?

I remembered (yonks ago). It was the examination period. Don?t we all love it? Honestly, I did! The concept was similar to practicing Public Relations in a crisis situation. It is imperative that you come out of it alive and looking your best.

The Scenario:
?Exams = Stress? (Stress in excess = Mental Breakdown)

The Solution:
?To minimize Stress = Retail Therapy? (You might not need it today, but tomorrow ? who knows?)

It is common knowledge that Singapore is a shopper?s paradise, especially Orchard Road. You can?t go wrong or what can go wrong? There are hundreds of exhilarating designer shops awaiting your patronage. And there I was merely doing my part, as a law abiding citizen, in boosting the economy.

Wait a minute, but, that was then. What about now?

from the cavern of my head
where the hermit of my mind snores weeks away
his symphony of body noise
convinced me he's not dead
and here, dear friends, is what he'd like to say:

"Thank you for the comments
you've been kind enough to write
I am thrilled by every new one that comes through
but I've been a total slacko
and extremely impolite
by not responding similarly to you

A 'selfish bloody ingrate'
is perhaps a little tough
and words such as 'self-centred' wouldn't fit
but all of these apply to me
accurately enough
the best, perhaps, a 'thankless little shit'

'Take, take, take' has been my creed
with nothing in return,
I won't bore you with excuses, they're too lame
I will flagellate my buttocks
With a cane, until they burn
And bow my head toward the ground in shame

Wait on, you say, that last bit,
Is a little tongue-in cheekish
Is that some of your facetiousness we hear?
Well, um, yeah, would you believe me
If I started acting sheepish?
(But the apology is totally sincere)"

Egyptian treasure at the V&A

Posted on Postcards: I had been talking earlier about our visit to the V&A in London in January. There are so many wonderful things in this museum that anyone could find a corner in which to enjoy themsleves. There are galleries of of Chinese, Egpytian, Roman and African antiquities. Other galleries hold beautiful examples of art work in gold and silver. Somewhere else is a gallery holding modern pieces of design that showcases the work of current young designers. Two very large rooms are filled with plaster reproductions of everything from Michelangelo's David to the doors of an Italian basillica.
In a corridor that runs between the two plaster reproduction galleries are 3 or 4 small plinths holding small items. It was here that I found this wonderful jug. At first glance it appeared to be a fin example of the glass makers art. It is only when you stop to read the information label that accompanies the jug that you discover that it was carved from a single piece of rock crystal. The walls of the jug are extremely thin and the surface is covered with stunning carvings. I find it amazing that this delicate piece has survived since it was made in Egypt in about 1000 CE. The story that it would be able to tell would be well worth the hearing.
In Amsterdam, I wanted to bring home the Delft violin from the Rijksmuseum. From the V&A, my favourite item that I want to bring home with me is this crystal jug. I suppose that it is a good thing that both pieces are stored behind glass or by now I might be in really big trouble.

Unfortunately, they have no set dates for proving RSS feeds on contents update and TOC alerts. As main stream medias have picked up RSS everywhere, I hope computing related publishers won't fall too far behind. It looks a little bit ironic.

BTW, it seems that [...]
